Lr Symbios SYM20102 SYM20102 Data Sheet Symbios SYM20102 SYM20102 Differential to Single-ended Ultra SCSI Bus Expander Board The SYM20102 SYM20102, based on the SYM53C120 SYM53C120, is a single board solution allowing the extension of device connectivity and/or cable length limits of the SCSI bus. The SYM20102 SYM20102 operates as a SCSI bus converter when a differential bus is connected to a single-ended bus. The board provides electrical isolation between the two separate SCSI buses. This product works with Symbios' extensive SYM53C7xx and SYM53C8xx family of SCSI products as well as other industry SCSI controllers. As an advantage, the SYM20102 SYM20102 does not require any software or consume a SCSI ID, allowing for easy integration and maximum bus utilization. Adding the SYM20102 SYM20102 to a SCSI bus environment creates a low-risk solution for applications requiring long cable lengths, scaleable device connectivity and SCSI bus electrical isolation. Benefits Ideal for cluster configurations for availability and scalability Does not consume a SCSI ID, completely transparent to the SCSI subsystem Electrically isolates SCSI buses The SCSI signals are re-timed as needed to guarantee or improve the required SCSI timings Complete board solution for quicker time-tomarket Expands device connectivity and cable distances in certain applications Precision delay control block guarantees specified timings such as output pulse widths, setup times and hold times Allows for large disk configurations Complete support for SCSI -1, -2, and -3 Improved reliability with a single chip solution Completely independent of software SYM20102 SYM20102 Ultra SCSI Bus Converter Board Bus Interface Plug-andPlay SCSI Rate SCSI Bus SCSI Connectors Two SCSI to SCSI Yes 40 MB/s Synchronous 14 MB/s Asynchronous 16-bit Single-ended to/from Differential (2) 68-pin Features Termination Power Termination-enable control Termination power can be supplied to or from the cable. Switch SW1 controls Side SE, while switch SW2 controls Side Diff. Termination power supplied through self resetting current limiting device Termination-power control Connectors for off-board SCSI active LEDs and termination-enable control Supports wide Ultra SCSI 40 MB/s synchronous transfer rate When the switches are ON, termination power is supplied to the on-board terminators and to TERMPWR on the cable from the board. When the switches are OFF, only TERMPWR from the cable is used to power the terminators. Accepts any asynchronous or synchronous data transfer rates up to Ultra SCSI One LED per side indicates that TERMPWR is shorted to ground. Targets and initiators can be located on either the SCSI A or B side SCSI Busy Supports TolerANT® active negation technology Technical Description Converts a differential SCSI bus to single-ended SCSI bus On-board switches for cable termination power and termination enable. Two four-pin connectors externally control termination enables and bus activity LEDs for both sides. Two LEDs per side, SCSI busy and cable termination power fault Powered by a standard hard drive power connector which is available in most systems and subsystems As with all of Symbios SYM53C7xx and SYM53C8xx SCSI products, the SYM20101 SYM20101 features TolerANT technology. The benefits of TolerANT include increased immunity to noise and better performance due to balanced duty cycles. Termination Control To aid the subsystem designer, the on-board active SCSI terminators can be controlled by either switches (SW3 & SW4) or the pin connector (J5). To disable the on-board active SCSI terminators, SW3 (SE) & SW4 (Diff) or external switches on the subsystem cabled to J4, should be ON. Figure 2 shows where these switches and pin connector are located. The board contains an LED per side which indicates when there is SCSI active on that side. Also, an LED interface (J5) allows an external LED harness to be connected to the board for external mounting of SCSI Busy LEDs.
