Revision C USB2I2C Programming Kit Quick-Start User's Guide SMX3201 SMX3201 General Description The SMX3201 SMX3201 USB programming system is used for device prototype development. The SMX3201 SMX3201 system consists of a programming Dongle, USB cable and WindowsTM GUI software. It can be ordered on the website or from a local representative. The latest revisions of all software is available from the website (http://www.summitmicro.com). The SMX3201 SMX3201 programming Dongle (Figure 1) and cable interface directly between a PC's USB port and the target application. The device is then configured onscreen via an intuitive graphical user interface employing drop-down menus. Several key, user-configurable functions are: · · · · · · · User-Programmable Output Voltages Power on/off sequence management Voltage Monitoring UV/OV detection on outputs Programmable nominal, high and low trim/margin voltages. Individual enable control. Programmable sequence time slots. SMX3201 SMX3201 User's Guide Table of Contents · Operating Instructions (Pg. 2) · USB2I2C Schematic (Pg. 8) · Layout Drawings (Pg. 8) · Bill of Materials (vendor sources) (Pg. 9) · Comments & Precautions (Pg. 9) · USB2I2C Programmer Dongle photo (Pg. 1, 10, 11) · Supported devices (Pg. 11) The Windows GUI software will generate the data and send it in I2C serial bus format so that it can be directly downloaded to the target device via the programming Dongle and cable. An example of the connection interface is shown in Figure 2. When design prototyping is complete, the software can generate a HEX data file that should be transmitted to Summit for approval. Summit will then assign a unique customer ID to the HEX code and program production devices before the final electrical test operations. This will ensure proper device operation in the end application. Additional features included on the USB2I2C board: · · · · · User-Programmable Interface connector to digitally control power supply voltages, sequencing, etc. Power Status Indicator (LED) included on board. USB supply 5V@500mA to power programmable device and board. USB-B Port connector Connects to standard USB 2.0 A/B cable SMX3201 SMX3201 Kit Contents 1. Personal Computer with Windows 2000/XP 2000/XP (or later O/S) and a USB port. Software setup 1. Close all open Windows application programs. 2. Insert the "Evaluation Kit Software" CD into the CD-ROM drive or download the software from (http://www.summitmicro.com). 3. Follow installation instructions to install the WindowsTM GUI and associated files 4. To install the programmer, run the program Setup.exe (the CR-ROM has an autorun feature). Follow the instructions on the screen. The drivers will be automatically copied to the location where the executable will be stored. The default location for the USB drivers is C:\Program Files\Summit SMXXXX Programmer\Drivers. SMXXXX refers to the SMX3201 SMX3201 supported devices as listed on the last page of this document. USB drivers: 1. USBIODS.sys 2. USBIODS.inf 5. Click the 'Browse' button and locate the USB drivers. The default location for the drivers is C:\Program Files\Summit SMXXXX Programmer\Drivers. The driver files can also be found in the accompanying Drivers.zip file on the CDROM. 6. Click Ok. The driver will be loaded on to your system. Dongle installation 1. Remove existing cabling from the computer's USB port. 2. Connect the USB2I2C Board USB cable to the USB port. The USB2I2C board is shown in Figure 1, 13 and 14. 3. Connect the USB2I2C Board to the USB-B connector on the cable (Figure 10), the LED (D1) should light up (Figures 13 and 14). 4. Follow the "Found New Hardware wizard" instructions on the screen. (Figures 3 through 11) 5. Insert the Dongle 10-pin header connector onto the SMXXXX Evaluation board connector (Match the notch or pin 1 designator on the Dongle connector with the silk screen on the EVAL card). The USB2I2C board connects directly to the SMXXXXEV connector J1 (Fig 16). 6. Open the File, Options, Advanced menu as shown in Figure 7 to select the interface option USB. 7. Open the `SMXXXX Programmer' application program and click on the `Standard Settings' button. The GUI shown in Figure 12 will appear on the screen. Hardware The USB2I2C programmer can supply 5V for programming, so an external supply is not necessary if the jumper "Dongle VCC" is set correctly. If an external supply is used, the jumper for "Dongle VCC" or "DongleVCC=VBATT" should be removed. D1 Top view of straight 0.1" x 0.1 closed-side connector. SMX3201 SMX3201 interface connector.
