s Semiconductors For the trade press Munich, October 1998 Banks give Siemens' smart card controller the security green light Siemens Semiconductors' 66 crypto-controller is the first smart card chip world-wide to be approved by the German Central Credit Control Committee of Banks (Zentraler Kreditausschuß, ZKA). ZKA, the union of the four German bank associations, confirmed that the SLE66CX160S SLE66CX160S chip fully complies with today's security requirements. The Siemens' controller will drive the next generation "Geldkarte" (money card) to be issued in the year 2000. Dr. Juergen Kuttruff, vice president and head of marketing of product division Security and Chip Card ICs of Siemens Semiconductors, said: "The ZKA approval of the SLE66CX160S SLE66CX160S proves Siemens Semiconductor's world-wide leading security expertise. Since July 1998 Siemens has been supplying this smart card controller in high volumes being the first supplier world-wide to offer such a 16-bit device. Siemens today presents IC solutions which address tomorrow's security needs." Like all 66 family members, the SLE66CX160S SLE66CX160S has a number of greatly enhanced security features. This chip processes RSA computations up to 2048 bits and is the only smart card controller on the market to support very fast calculation of elliptical curves. Powerful peripherals of the 66 family include: · · a random number generator fully implemented in hardware generating true random numbers through its analogue structure 16-bit timer Siemens AG Corporate Communications Press Office Reference number: HL CC 1098.003 e Press Office Semiconductors Monika Sonntag Postfach 80 17 09, D-81617 D-81617 Munich Tel.: +49 89 636-24497, Fax: -27459 E-mail:monika.sonntag@siemens-scg.com -2- · · CRC module (cyclic redundancy check) interrupt logic to support processing of real-time applications. Memory capacities of 32 Kbytes ROM and 1.2 Kbytes RAM simplify programming and allow multiapplication-capable operating systems on one chip card. All 66 controllers have a specifically designed CPU core which is compatible to the 8051-instruction set. Siemens' Semiconductor Group is a leading worldwide provider of integrated circuits, memory products, RF components and discrete, power and opto semiconductors and fiber optic components. The comprehensive product line of Siemens Semiconductors serves a wide range of customers active in telecommunications, automation, data processing, automotive and consumer electronics. Siemens is the market leader for Chipcard ICs. In fiscal 1996/97, the Semiconductor Group achieved sales of $3.5 billion (DM 5.9 billion) and employed 22,600 people worldwide.
