Data Sheet January 2008 PS-3000 PS-3000 Power Distribution Shelf BP-3000 BP-3000 Backplane for the AC-3000 AC-3000[±]48 Rectifier and the DC-3000-48 DC-3000-48 PEM Holds two power supplies in a standard 19-inch rack Power supply outputs can be fed independently or in parallel Shelves can be electrically interconnected and stacked both horizontally and vertically The PS-3000 PS-3000 Power Distribution Shelf provides mounting for two AC-3000 AC-3000[±]48 Rectifiers or DC3000-48 DC3000-48 PEMs and a power distribution board across a 19-inch rack. Front ear mounting brackets fit into the industry EIA rack standard U spacing arrangement. The zero-height design of the shelf does not require any additional vertical cabinet space. The shelf is also mechanically keyed, preventing the insertion of an AC-3000 AC-3000+48 power supply into a -48V system and vice versa. Outputs of the two power supplies can either be paralleled into a single feeder, or they can be independently fed so each power supply sources an isolated distribution bus. Bus bars are utilized to parallel the outputs of the two power supplies. Shelves can be stacked and electrically interconnected in various parallel arrangements to provide higher power levels. Paralleling can be accomplished both horizontally and vertically when shelves are stacked by interconnecting the paralleling pins of the output control connector on the backplane board. A number of optional configurations are being entertained for future introduction. One option provides the shelf without mounting ears, so it could be positioned into en existing 19-inch shelf. A second option would add a set of mounting ears at the mid-plane of the enclosure. Data Sheet January 2008 PS-3000 PS-3000 Power Distribution Shelf BP-3000 BP-3000 Backplane Shelf Keying Figure 1 shows the mechanical keying in place on the PS-3000 PS-3000 shelf. Pins at the rear of each power supply section prevent installation of a rectifier of the wrong polarity. Figure 1: Shelf Key Pins Shelf Dimensions 17.42" 17.95" Retention Bar 17.57" The Retention Bar is used to keep the rigidity of the mounting ears intact during shipping and handling. It is also used for properly aligning the shelf into its rack and to provide precise spacing between the two power supply slots. Once the shelf has been secured tightly in the rack the retention bar should be removed and discarded. 0.075" Top View 0.234" 1.750" 18.53" 18.09" 1.375" 2.550" 1.138" 16.723" 19.00" 0.875" 0.500" 0.525" Side View 1.933" Front View Figure 2: Shelf Dimensions 2 Lineage Power Data Sheet January 2008 PS-3000 PS-3000 Power Distribution Shelf BP-3000 BP-3000 Backplane Connections All connections are made to the BP-3000 BP-3000 backplane board. We do not recommend the more common quarterinch hole stud because it would create excessive play and potential shorting between adjacent lugs. The backplane is designed so either a single output feed or two independent, isolated outputs can be configured. Figure 4 shows the connections for two independent outputs, and Figure 5 shows the backplane interconnects for single output operation. 48OUTRTN 48OUTRTN Bus Bar 48OUT 48OUT Bus Bar TN TR OU 48 UT O 48 IN UT EO AM TN FR UTR O 48 UT O 48 AC IN 8 -4 N RT AC IN 8IN -4 N D RT -GR CO DC Input and Output The dc input and dc output are brought into the shelf by two-hole tubular compression-type termination lugs. Each of these connections accepts the 75A capacity requirement. This is a special lug that accepts a #10 stud into the mounting holes and accommodates a six-gauge stranded wire. The recommended part is either an internal Lineage Power controlled part WP91412 WP91412, L108 or FCI part #YA6CL-2TC10 YA6CL-2TC10. Lineage Power can provide cable kits to specific lengths and terminations. State-of-art crimping tools, quality assurance and a wealth of experience assure the reliable supply of these cable assemblies to industry standards. AMP published an application note [114-1043 revB] that explains the kit and provides information on plug sizes and wire sizes. Twist pairing of the input wires or a shielded cable is suggested in order to ensure that the EMI filtering of the power supplies is not compromised. Pin assignments for ac input connectors P4 and P5 are as follows: Figure 5: Single Output External bus bars are utilized to parallel the outputs of the two power supplies when a single Lineage Power 3 Data Sheet January 2008 PS-3000 PS-3000 Power Distribution Shelf BP-3000 BP-3000 Backplane Connections (continued) output bus is desired. Regulator A Power Supply - 1 Figure 8: Diode Or'ed Bias for Communication Figure 6: Single Output Bus Bar Installation Control Signals Control signals for the two power supplies are combined on the backplane board into a single 50-pin ribbon cable connector. The suggested part is AMP 1-746285-0 insulation displacement ribbon cable terminated connector. Although other connectors may fit the application, we strongly suggest against defeating the locking feature of this connector assembly. Paralleling Power Supplies in a Single Shelf Two paralleling schemes are may be used: Option 1: A two-position jumper (J1) enables connecting the paralleling pins together on the backplane. J1 is shipped from the factory seated on two of the three pins of the J1 connector. One of these pins is an open and is only used for retaining the shorting connector on the backplane. The connector needs to be positioned to the other end for shorting out the current share connections of the two slots. Multiple shelves should not be interconnected because the current capacity of each power supply could be compromised. 4 Option 2: Tie together the paralleling pins (pins 7 and 14) of the 50 pin P3 connector. Lineage Power Data Sheet January 2008 PS-3000 PS-3000 Power Distribution Shelf BP-3000 BP-3000 Backplane Connections (continued) Parallel Shelves Option 1: This option offers all features of the PS3000 PS3000 shelf in a multiple shelf configuration. Parallel multiple shelves by interconnecting the paralleling pins (pins 7 and 14) of the output control connector P3 on the shelf distribution board. Pin assignments for the 50 pin control cable are included in the Additional Electrical and Mechanical Information section if required. AM7 backplanes have 3-pin headers, and if current share is to be used, the current share jumper (J1) must be configured as shown in Figures 11a and 11b. The mating connector for HDR1 and HDR2 is AMP 104257-2 using contacts AMP 104480-4. HDR2 3 2 1 Option 2: This option allows easier cabling for simple multiple shelf operation where PS-3000 PS-3000 alarm and control features are not required. All power modules can be controlled with a single SPST switch by connecting headers HDR1 and HDR2 (see Figure 7) in a daisy chain fashion. Note that connectors HDR1 and HDR2 are wired in parallel on the backplane and can be used interchangeably when connecting from shelf to shelf or to the switch. The PEM interconnect maintains the required isolation between primary (power input and output) and secondary (communications and control). An EMI filter provides approximately 60 dB of noise rejection between system components and the input office connection. Input CO GRD gets connected to the single point frame ground connection of the frame. The output of the rectifier is purposely tied to frame ground in order to assure that the output voltage in the common shelf has an established reference point.
