TechTools QuickWriterTM Hardware Version 1.0 Errata Description: QuickWriter hardware version 1.0 requires a small modification
QW1.0-ERRATA TechTools QuickWriterTM Hardware Version 1.0 Errata Description: QuickWriter hardware version 1.0 requires a small modification in order to properly access parallel PICmicro MCU microcontrollers (i.e. PIC16C52/54/55/56/57/58 PIC16C52/54/55/56/57/58). Without this modification, QuickWriter's programming/reading voltage may rise too quickly for some of these older MCUs, resulting in permament chip failure. Although it is possible to read/ write some of these MCUs successfully, we STRONGLY advise making the modification described below before attempting ANY access to these devices. 3. Slightly twist the blade counter clockwise. 4. Repeat steps #1 and #2 for the second notch, then apply a slight downward force that will finish separating the case into two sections. After the modification is complete and the appropriate selection has been made in the software (version 1.5 or above), your hardware will be identified as Version 1.1. To perform the upgrade, you will need the following: · Bypass capacitor (.1uf) · Small, flat blade screw driver. · Soldering Iron with solder. The following section describes the modification procedure in simple illustrated steps. Solution: ! 1. Find the two notches on the side of Quickwriter's case (in the ribbed area) and select a small, flat blade srew driver that will fit within the notched area as shown below. " 2. Insert the srew driver in the notch and apply forward pressure. (972) 272-9392, FAX: (972) 494-5814, sales@tech-tools.com, http://www.tech-tools.com Copyright © 2002 TechTools, P.O. Closely inspect the capacitor leads and solder connections for possible shorts to unintended pins. Verify that the capcitor leads do not touch any exposed traces or pins other than the two identified by the arrows below. 5. Remove the PC board from the case. # & 6. Turn the PC board over to expose the "solder Side", and find the two pins of the adapter connector identified by arrows in the picture below. 9 Insert the PC board in the case and snap the case halves together. $ 10. Connect the power adapter and serial cable, then launch the QuickWriter software (Version 1.5 or above). 11. After the software has loaded, select a parallel PICmicro MCU microcontroller (i.e. PIC16C52/54/ PIC16C52/54/ 55/56/57/58). Then select "Run - Reset QuickWriter". If you have version 1.0 hardware, a "Modification Required" dialog will appear. Select the checkbox stating "I have made the modification. Do not show this message again", then choose "OK" to close the dialog. 7. Bend the leads of the capacitor to form a "C" shape that will connect to the identified pins (without touching any others) and solder the capacitor in place. 12. The modification is now complete. To verify, select "Help - About QuickWriter". Your hardware version should now be identified as "1.1" and you can safely program/read parallel PICmicro MCU microcontrollers. % (972) 272-9392, FAX: (972) 494-5814, sales@tech-tools.com, http://www.tech-tools.com Copyright © 2002 TechTools, P.O.
