Digital Proportional Controller TX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308R ATS308R DIGITAL PROPORTIONAL REMOTE CONTROLLER General Description The TX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308R ATS308R is a pair of CMOS LSIs designed for remote controlled car applications. TX8 ATS308T ATS308T is the encoder and RX8 ATS308R ATS308R is the decoder. TX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308R ATS308R provide two independent analog proportional channels and two independent digital channels. The two analog proportional channels not only can control the RC two-wheel-drive (2WD) car's motions of Forward&Backward speed by one independent channel and Left&Right steering angle by another independent channel, but also can control the RC four-wheel-drive (4WD) car's motions of one and another set of motors. The two digital channels can provide on-off motion for RC designs, such as designs in sound, light and motor controller Transmitter and receiver can be made with a simple and economic solution that ASK modulation and super regenerative demodulation can be used. TX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308R ATS308R are easy to yield and debug steering servo. TX8 ATS308T ATS308T has a particular selective MOD function. When MOD pin is open(floating), encoder/decoder is used for controlling the RC electrical car or tank by two independent channels operation mode. And when Mod pin is pulled down to GND, they are used for controlling tank or Monster truck (4WD) by two channels cooperative operation mode. TX8 ATS308T ATS308T is built with auto Power-OFF function. When the digital or analog channels input is effective, TX8 ATS308T ATS308T will wake up, and SO and SC will continuously send out the outputs used in wireless (Non-Carrier) and infrared (Carrier) applications respectively. When a complete code is sent out and ineffective input, TX8 ATS308T ATS308T will automatically go into power-off mode for saving power for RC transmitter. RX8 ATS308R ATS308R has the superior steering servo feedback function and CH2's outputs that can be adjustable for driving servomotor. RX8 ATS308R ATS308R provides two high effective amplifiers and enhancive Signal Input (SI) recognition circuit for increasing remote control distance. RX8 ATS308R ATS308R has an internal, selectable DC-DC converter that makes the application stable, reliable under lower supply voltage. Provide two independent digital channels (F1and F2) for on-off control. Provide 2.7V reference voltage. OFFSET1/OFFSET2 can move the channel input voltage range of CH1 and CH2 up and down whole, thereby inputs being in the dead band . Provide input control mode selection for two analog channels. When MOD pin is open, CH1 and CH2 work absolute independently. The traditional RC car and tank can be realized through this mode. When MOD pin is pulled low. CH1 and CH2 inputs are combined and calculated according to the design formula in chip. Through the way, the tank (4WD) can be controlled by the handle similar to RC car. PC pin is provided. Digital Proportional Controller TX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308T/RX8 ATS308R ATS308R Detailed Description and Application notes (1) Analog Channel Inputs of TX8 ATS308T ATS308T TX8 ATS308T ATS308T provides two independent analog channels (Ch1 and Ch2) and two offset adjustment inputs (Offset1 and Offset2) for every analog channel. There are 28 usable steps totally for each channel besides 4 steps dead band, and 14 steps on both sides of dead band of course. Considering the offset adjustment of two analog channels, Offset1 (for Ch1) and Offset2 (For Ch2) inputs are provided for moving the channel input voltage range of CH1 and CH2 up and down whole, thereby inputs being in the dead band. The usage of OFFSET adjustment function is selectable. The input voltage of OFFSET should be set to 1/2 Vref by placing two resistors whose value is equal, if unused Notice that the analog channel input range absolutely meet the requirements of voltage that is generated by variable resistor (2.7V reference is used). The resistor's Total-RotationAngle is 220 °, its value is 5 K , and its effective input range must be above 50°. If the input rotation angle is less than 50°, some steps should be losing. How to resolve the problem? Using external higher reference Voltage is a good way. (2) SO and SC output signals of TX8 ATS308T ATS308T SO is the base band signal that is used for wireless application. SC is the signal that has be modulated by somewhat carrier signal. Notice that the carrier signal frequency is half of oscillator's frequency. In the IR application, the different carrier frequency can be set throughout the changing the oscillator's resistor. (3) MOD function of TX8 ATS308T ATS308T TX8 ATS308T ATS308T particularly provides the MOD function for the designs that realize the car's motorial form by controlling tank (4WD)'s motions through the RC car (2WD)'s handles (one for driving Speed, another for steering servo) (4) Function Outputs of RX8 ATS308R ATS308R corresponding to TX8 ATS308T ATS308T's analog channel inputs When the signal come into the SI input that is from amplifies and RF circuit, RX8 ATS308R ATS308R will decode the encoded signal, and produce the corresponding outputs. As the input voltage of Ch1 or Ch2 is equal or above than 1.7V, M1N or M2N will be High Logic and M1 or M2 will hold Low Logic Level. Also as the input voltage of Ch1 or Ch2 is equal or less than 1.0V, M1 or M2 will be High Logic and M1N or M2N will hold Low Logic Level. In others input situations of TX8 ATS308T ATS308T, the duty ratio of PWM signal will change linearly. PWM signal period is 8ms(when oscillator's frequency is 128KHz), and the first step's duty is 12.5%, then increase 6.25% ratio step by step, until High Logic. Of course one output is active when another match inactive (Low logic). Just like driving a car, people know how many steering wheel angles should be rotated depending on eyes. The feedback of eyes must be necessary. In the steering servo applications, how to insure the rotation angles lies on outsides feedback. That is VR feedback. The outputs (LEFT and RIGHT) of chip drive the motor by the driving circuit, then the rotation of motor affects one DC level, and the DC level's feedback to the chip makes the chip changing the outputs to what the CHANNEL wanted after signal processing. Relation between chip outputs and VR feedback voltage is indirect. DC motor and geardown mechanical architecture play an important role. Figure blow shows this close relation. When TX8 ATS308T ATS308T's Ch2 analog input is in the dead band, then adjust the input voltage of VR pin until there is no any active outputs of LEFT and RIGHT, and just now a measurement of VR input voltage shows that voltage is about 1.35V(two steps' dead band) (actual voltage range depending on actual device `s reference voltage). Notice that the analog channel input range absolutely meet the requirements of voltage that is generated by variable resistor (2.7V reference is used). (6)Adjustment Oscillator for TX8 ATS308T ATS308T's Ch2 input Adjustment oscillator is used in the regulating of the outputs (M2, M2N, LEFT, RIGHT) corresponding to the Ch2 analog Channel input. When the frequency of Main oscillator is equal to the adjustment oscillator's, all the outputs about CH2 is just like what the forth descriptions above say. If the value of adjustment oscillator's frequency is changed, all the outputs' PWM signal duty ratio will vary linearly up and down Adjustment function about CH2 is very important for the designs. For example, different value of the first step's duty for driving the steering servo is needed because of different mechanical architecture and motor characteristics of different types of steering motors.
