Every product we design, develop and manufacture is geared towards customers' satisfaction. From day one, AMT `s focus has been on providing a total quality package of highly reliable touch screens and excellent service and support. There are more and more touch screens assembled to medical and other highly specialized equipments with complex electronic circuitry which make them highly susceptible to radio frequency disturbances and could easily affect touch screen calibration performance. Resistive type touch screens when affected by electromagnetic interference could cause the cursor to jiggle and cause touch operation inaccuracy. How is this EMI interference prevented? In this issue of AMT Express, we share with you our experience and expertise in this field. There are different degrees of electromagnetic interference and AMT has different materials and design solutions to combat the electromagnetic interference from affecting the performance of the equipment. Basically a good conductive material could be enough to prevent EMI disturbances, because the radical ion can rapidly distributes and weaken the electromagnetic wave within. The better the conductor's electrical conductivity, the shallower the depth of penetration for electromagnetic wave will be. AMT together with customer can develop and design anti-electromagnetic interference solution based on the system's different conditions; it can be with EMI ferrites attached to the FPC tail or having conductive coating layer laminated behind the touch screen. At present, we have several designs and methods for having the conductive coating layer behind the touch screen such as adding a high surface resistance conductive layer of 300 ~ 500 ohm/sq; or a low sheet surface resistance of conductive layer of 15~50 ohms/sq. In circumstances where the above solutions cannot solve customer EMI problem, we could provide special conductive layer with a surface resistance of lower than 5 ohms/sq. However, adding a low resistance conductive layer will affect the light transmission characteristics of the touch screen but this step is taken when EMI solution takes precedence. Other selection of extremely low resistance material is also available from us, such as metal mesh screen. Conductive tape is laminated around the touch screen to complete the EMI solution. Other options which AMT can provide include conductive rubber and copper tapes, metal mesh gasket, and others. These are laminated to the rear of the touch screen to connect with the system grounding. The above methods are different types of EMI solutions for your consideration.
