The decoder is designed ideally for the next generation of DVD players and set-top boxes in the consumer electronics arena. It reduces system cost substantially because it requires no external host CPU. AML3188 AML3188 performs full function DVD decoding, real-time OS (i.e., Microsoft WinCE), and set-top box applications (i.e., Web-browser) all in an integrated single chip solution. Further, it only requires a single 16 Mbit DRAM to operate the DVD decoder using our proprietary compression technique to efficiently utilize the memory space. Dolby Digital audio AC-3 5.1 channel decoding, CSS descrambler, subpicture decoding, picture-in-picture (PIP), picture-ingraphic (PIG) and high resolution on-screen display (OSD) are all implemented on-chip. With Twister's extensive and programmable software/hardware architecture, audio 3-D surround sound effects, MPEG audio decoding (layer 1,2, & 3), key control and echo sound for karaoke function are also supported without additional hardware components. For Internet set-top box applications, Twister has a built-in high-resolution graphics capability to support a true 64k color graphics display on a NTSC or PAL TV. It is also equipped a flicker-free and reliably stable picture when converting from a non-interlaced source video to an interlaced one. System cost and effort is saved by the decoder's glueless interface logic to the DVD/CD DSP, audio DAC, DRAM, EPROM, and NTSC/PAL TV encoder. AML3188 AML3188 also provides two UART(s), IrDA, modem interface, GPIO, Super IO, PS/2 type bidirectional parallel port, IDE with DMA transfer, a 32-bit universal PCI interface, built-in real time clock support, and full power management scheme on-chip.
