ADT7466 ADT7466 Evaluation Board EVAL-ADT7466EB EVAL-ADT7466EB OBJECTIVE This evaluation board allows the input and output functions of the ADT7466 ADT7466 to be demonstrated without the need for external components. The software allows control and monitoring of the ADT7466 ADT7466's internal registers. Using the evaluation board and its accompanying software, the ADT7466 ADT7466 can be interfaced to any PC running Windows® XP, Windows® 2000, and Windows® Millennium via the USB port. EVALUATION BOARD HARDWARE The evaluation board contains an ADT7466 ADT7466, thermistors, remote transistors for temperature sensing, fans and fan drive circuitry, SPI® switches for different configurations, and indicator LEDs. It also contains on-board heaters so a complete thermal environment may be simulated. The evaluation board is connected to the computer via the USB port. The ADT7466 ADT7466 evaluation board and fans are powered from the USB port. An external power supply is only needed for the on-board heaters. The parameter setup is divided into four categories. Each parameter may be checked to apply the easy setup value or unchecked to leave the default value. A full list of registers and default values is available in the ADT7466 ADT7466 data sheet. General: Enables the part monitoring. Limits: Sets temperature, fan, VCC, and THERM limits. Fan Setup: Sets fan parameters as well as the thermistor monitoring configuration. Control Setup: Sets automatic fan control (AFC) parameters. After easy setup, all parameters may be changed in either the visual display or control dialog box, or directly at register level in the register access dialog box. LED D4 indicates that the evaluation board is powered on. LED D6 indicates that the heater supply is connected to the board. LED D3 is turned on when the ALERT pin of the ADT7466 ADT7466 is asserted. The part powers up in thermistor monitoring mode. On the evaluation board, the thermistors are connected to the ADT7466 ADT7466 via SPI switches. The switches are open by default; therefore, the ALERT LED remains illuminated until the easy setup function closes the switches. LED D1 is connected to the multifunction Pin 7 (FAN1_ON/PROCHOT/THERM). The LED remains on after power-up until Fan1 starts spinning. LED D2 indicates when a fan has stalled or failed to spin up. USING THE SOFTWARE When using the software, first ensure the evaluation board is connected to the USB port. Easy Setup The software includes an easy setup function that sets the parameters required to configure the ADT7466 ADT7466 and evaluation board. The easy setup button is in the visual display window. 05426-001 Indicator LEDs Figure 1. Select Parameters for Easy Setup Dialog Box Visual Display Dialog Box The current temperature and fan speed are plotted in the Visual Display dialog box. Selected parameters may also be displayed on a bar graph on the left side of this box. Adjusting the sliders on the bar graph changes the limits of the displayed function. A red button indicates an out-of-limit condition, and the ALERT LED on the evaluation board also illuminates. Rev. 0 Information furnished by Analog Devices is believed to be accurate and reliable. EVAL-ADT7466EB EVAL-ADT7466EB 05426-002 The software allows control of the parameters in the Fan Configuration dialog box without accessing individual registers. There are also specific automatic fan control tabs that plot the AFC settings and predict the fan speed vs. the temperature. Figure 2. Visual Display The Options dialog box allows you to reconfigure the device and evaluation board setup without writing to individual registers. This allows simple control for configuring the multifunctional pins. For example, Pin 11 and Pin 12 may be used as a second remote diode input, thermistor inputs, or analog inputs. This controls the register settings and state of the switches on the evaluation board for the different configurations. 05426-004 Options Dialog Box Figure 4. Fan Configuration The on-board heater function allows control of the heaters on the evaluation board, which determines the remote and thermistor temperatures, respectively. This function may be used in association with the AFC to increase the fan speed by increasing the temperature in the remote channels. An external 12 V power supply is needed for this function. Register Access Dialog Box 05426-003 Each register can be individually read and written to using the Register Access dialog box. This also allows you to look at the registers' settings that correspond to specific configurations. The registers are grouped according to functionality. Figure 3. Options Fan configurations may also be controlled. 05426-005 To use automatic fan control (AFC), the following parameters must be set: · Which temperature controls which fan Figure 5. Register Access · Fan start voltage · Minimum fan speed See the ADT7466 ADT7466 data sheet for more information and a full register map. · Maximum fan speed ORDERING GUIDE · Operating temperature range Model EVAL-ADT7466EB EVAL-ADT7466EB Rev. 0 | Page 2 of 8 Package Description Evaluation Board EVAL-ADT7466EB EVAL-ADT7466EB 05426-006 EVALUATION BOARD SCHEMATICS Figure 6.
